Hi, I’m Emily, a marketing student from Canada, and this summer I’ve been interning with a tech startup in Shanghai through e-Global Interns. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a remote internship at first, but honestly, it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my studies so far. Here’s what a typical day looks like for me.
Morning: Waking Up to a Global Team
8:00 AM — First thing I do is check Slack and email. Since my team is in China, they’re several hours ahead of me, so by the time I wake up, I usually already have feedback and new tasks waiting.
8:30 AM — We have a short Zoom stand-up meeting. It’s just 15 minutes, but it really helps me feel connected. I share what I worked on yesterday, what I’ll be focusing on today, and if I need help with anything. Even though I’m thousands of miles away, I feel like part of the team.
Afternoon: Diving Into Projects
After the meeting, I get to work. Today, I’m researching how other international brands market their products in Asia. I compile my notes into a presentation for my supervisor, who’ll review it later in the week.
Around 2:00 PM, I take a quick break, then spend the afternoon creating posts for the company’s social media accounts. I love that my work is actually published — it feels great to know my ideas are making an impact.
At 3:30 PM, I have a one-on-one call with my mentor. She gives me feedback on my writing and also shares tips about working in Chinese business culture. I learn something new in every session.
Evening:
I wrap up my notes and upload today’s work to the shared drive. Before logging off, I send my supervisor a short update so they know what I’ve completed. I love how organized this system is — I can clearly see my progress each week.
Reflection:
Every day looks a little different, but what stays the same is the sense of growth. I’m learning real skills, gaining international experience, and building confidence to pursue a global career — all without leaving home.
